GENNARO SICA
TENOR
Over the course of my sixty-year career, I have performed an expansive repertoire of opera, operettas, oratories and Lieder in their original languages, ecompassing a compositional arc from the mid seventheenth century to the modern day.
After graduating in singing I continued my studies by specialising at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia – in Rome and the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena. Under the supervision of two of the most famous singers of the twentieth century, Carlo Tagliabue (baritone) and Ernst Häfliger (tenor), I was trained in the principles of the old Italian school of singing, and have faithfully applied them throughout the course of over sixty years of artistic activity.
I have been awarded in international singing competitions Beniamino Gigli in Macerata, in Spoleto, in Münich, in Toulouse and in Barcelona.
In 1963 I made my debut in the role of Ferrando in Mozart’s Così fan tutte (Spoleto). Since then, it has been in Rossini’s operas I have performed the most, from L’Italiana in Algeri, Cenerentola (Teatro alla Scala, Milan), Le Comte Ory (Münich), Il Barbiere di Siviglia (Berlin), Il Turco in Italia (Vienna).
In Germany and Austria-Ratisbona, Darmstadt, Mannheim, Monaco di Baviera, Wien: theaters of debut and artistic development-, I have performed in several Mozart operas, German Lieder and classical operettas, dividing most of my career living between Germany and Italy, and fluent in both languages.
Setting in Florence, I taught at the Conservatorio di Musica Luigi Cherubini where I successfully established specialised courses for singes in orthoepy, acting and dramatic oration.
I later graduated in Artistic Vocology at the University of Bologna, under the tutelage of Professor Franco Fussi. I was eager to deepen both my theoretical understanding of singing and my scientific and anatomical knowledge of the pratical application of the voice. My final thesis, The Study of Singing: Lessons in Vocal Ecology was published in La voce del cantante volume quinto Omega Edition, Bologna 2009. www.edomega.com.
I continue to teach young singers and apply my own training and sixty years of pratical application throughout my career.
I have supervised the direction of operas, operettas and unpublished Intermezzi of the Neapolitan eighteenth century.
I have also researched and rediscovered little known and hitherto unpublished classic Neapolitan songs from the eighteenth century, recording them to CD for future study and enjoyment.
